Andreas Löwe - the circle is complete

At Dortmund on December 27th the circle was complete: In the final race of the year 2016 Andreas Löwe did saddle his last starter, the gelding Evario. And he said goodbye as a trainer in style by winning. It was the last chapter in 35 years as a horse racing trainer at Cologne. A book he had opened in 1981 by winning his first race with Adita on Group level.

But it was by no means the last chapter in the even bigger book of thoroughbred racing Löwe is still writing. It started at Ravensberg stud in 1960 where Löwe learned to be become a jockey. But because of weight problems race riding was never his. Instead he developed his knowledge about breeding, training and leading a stud. Many years Lowe was running the well-known studs Fohlenhof and Waldfried.

Then a fresh start as public trainer. „Being successful is the salt in the soup” was his theme and Löwe lived up to it: He won 1.163 flat races and 25 over obstacles.

He earned almost EUR 16 million for his owners. With five horses he won on the highest level: Silvester Lady was the first by winning the German Oaks in 2001, Mystic Lips followed in her hoof steps in 2007. Amaron took a Gr.1 in Italy in 2012 and in 2014 Lucky Lion (Grosser Dallmayr Preis) and Sirius (Grosser Preis von Berlin) were successful.

In total Lowe managed seven classical winners: Apart from the two Oaks wins he took the German 1000 Guineas four times and once the German 2000 Guineas (Lucky Lion).

Obviously Lowe has difficulties to pick his best horses. Apart from the Gr.1 winners – in particular Amaron and Lucky Lion - he describes Protector – winner of the Gr.2 Gerling Preis in 1993 and the Gr.2 Hansa Preis in 1996 – as a „special horse for me as he did compete on Group level for eight long years”. It is a similar story with Amaron who won eight Group races between 2011 and 2015.

Amaron also is a good example for the new career Löwe has started now as "Thoroughbred Service Agent". Löwe did buy Amaron at Tattersalls for Winterhauch Stud. „With my new company I do offer my services in all threads of thoroughbred training and breeding”, Löwe says. „Mainly I will act as thoroughbred agent as my activities at the sales are a very successful passion of mine.”

Orfisio, Mystic Lips, Sehrezad, Lucky Lion, Sirius or Son Macia are good examples for the instinct Lowe possesses – to find top class horses for a reasonable price. He will scan the sales in England, France and Baden-Baden for his clients.

„I love the uniqueness of the horses”, Löwe explains. „I want to pass on the sentiments, the excitement I do feel for these animals.” To live a well-earned life as a pensioner was never an option: „Since 1960 I've been almost daily in the stables. I can't and don't want to switch off the engine completely.”
